Abstract

This paper is a study on religion as foundation of ethical duty. In the fight of the intimate assotiation between religion and ethics,it is only natural that the question arises whether ethics depends on religion in any essential way. Ethical norms form a large part of religious teachings. Ethics, being essentially concerned with the good, would depend directly on God for its very existence.
A more interesting way to construe ethics as depending on religion would be on the basis of a Divine command theory of ethics, identifying the moral good with God¢¥ will or with what God commands.
This discussion of how ethics might depend on religion has concentrated so far on links that might be thought to obtain between God and the good. Oue knowing whether it is good or not might depend on God. To whatever extent moral knowledge depends on God ethics could be said to depend on religion epistemologically.
